...in my automatic transmission rental car and I'm still pressing the (absent) clutch out of habit.

I own a stick shift Nissan Note and a Panther. I am constantly firing my left foot into the abyss that is the floor of my Grand Marquis' clutch pedal-less footwell.

It's the worst when there's a foot activated parking brake over there.

Sometimes in my wife's WJ I hold the brake pedal with my left foot to start the car. I chuckle a little every time.

At least you're not accidentally nailing the brake pedal to the floor with your left foot every time you "change gears." People right behind you in traffic hate it when you do that, I have observed.

I've nailed the regular brake once like that.

I do that ALL THE TIME when I drive cars with automatics.

Yeah...as soon as I fail to intercept said pedal upon starting the vehicle, my brain disables the left leg for the remainder of the drive.

Hate that shit. I'd always put the automatic loaner car I got in park because was going for reverse and went too far. Stupid gated shifters.

I DD a 2000 Dodge Dakota with a 5-speed. We picked up our new 2010 Explorer that's an auto about a week ago. I still hit the imaginary clutch to start the damn thing.

Fold your left leg below the seat (or under your right leg) You won't have the itch anymore.

Did the same thing with the rental Fiat I had back in November (automatic 'cause 'MURICA!) while my (non-ST) Focus was in for a warranty repair.
